What is a Bone Density Exam?
Bone density is a medical test that measures the amount of mass in your bones. Osteoporosis is often called the "silent disease". There are rarely signs until a lot of bone has been lost. Bone densitometry is one such test that uses a small amount of x-rays to measure the amount of bone mineral. This amount relates directly to bone strength.
Typically, a measurement is made of one hip and the lumbar spine. You will be asked to lie on your back and an overhead arm will move over your body, taking readings. The test takes approximately 15-20 minutes.
